Buckhead Neighborhood Guide: Tuxedo Park

Welcome to Tuxedo Park!

Located off Northside/Habersham and West Paces Ferry

Tuxedo Park is Atlanta’s most prestigious neighborhood and the area holds a rich history in the homes of their significant residents. The Paces Ferry area was developed beginning in 1904 from a rural area into summer estates for Atlanta’s wealthiest residents.

In 1911, Charles H. Black Sr. bought 300 acres of West Paces Ferry Road for $75,000 for what would become the Tuxedo Park neighborhood of Buckhead. Paces Ferry is named after a ferry service that Hardy Pace ran in the early 1800s where Peachtree Creek meets the Chattahoochee River. Much of Tuxedo Park’s land was once owned by James H. Smith who died in 1872.

One of the most significant properties is where Georgia Governer’s Mansion now sits on West Paces Ferry Road. It was previously home to former Atlanta mayor Robert Maddox’s estate “Woodhaven” from 1911 to 1963. The tract was originally part of 400 acres owned by F.M. Powers and sold in 1904 to James L. Dickey, Sr.
